Things we share | Members' festival 2024

La Centrale galerie Powerhouse is excited to invite you to Things We Share, a knowledge sharing festival hosted by La Centrale’s membership from June 17 to June 22 2024. With a focus on collaborative ways of working and learning, Things We Share puts on display the knowledge, skills, and creative practices of La Centrale’s members. 

During the festival, La Centrale’s members will facilitate a series of workshops that respond to the different creative needs and interests of our community. As an artist-run center, La Centrale is driven by the commitment and energy of our members. This festival celebrates our membership and highlights the crucial role La Centrale’s members have in supporting our mission and building our community. 

La Centrale welcomes the public to attend these free workshops, or simply stop by the gallery to connect and enjoy a cold drink.

**All events are free and take place at La Centrale galerie Powerhouse (4296 boul. Saint-Laurent).

 

PROGRAMMING

 

Monday June 17, 2-4 PM

Printing with Plants : Alternative Photography Workshop, by Oriana Confente

In this workshop, we will discuss some of the social and environmental impacts of image production, while contemplating desirable futures for this artistic practice, and try an alternative photographic process called photogram.

 

Tuesday June 18, 1-3 PM

Mending the Future, by Alicia Aikens

Some misfit items will be available for participants to choose as their project for the class. Attendees will be equipped with basic mending skills and introduced to some more adventurous techniques for reinventing items in their wardrobe. The goal is to turn the lost objects into meaningful pieces that will have a new home.

 

Wednesday June 19, 5-7 PM

Sensory Listening, by Salima Punjani

More like a rest-stop than a work-shop, this event is inspired by Progression, Salima’s installation and research at Ada X. Participants will collect sounds, songs, and soundscapes that put them at ease. We will focus on the theme of comfort: please think about a sound that symbolizes comfort for you to share with the group.

 

Thursday June 20, 5-7 PM

Writing as Artists : How to Prepare a Grant Application, by Shazia Ahmad

This workshop will illuminate the grant writing process for artists, providing tips for enhanced writing skills, explaining your projects to the jury in clear ways, portfolio preparation, and going over the budget preparation process.

 

Vendredi 21 juin, 5:30-7:30 PM

Chinese knot-making, by Allegra Hu

Chinese knot-making is an ancient crafting technique that still holds rich cultural significance today. Different Chinese knots have various meanings, uses, and histories. Participants will leave the workshop with an appreciation for slow-made, traditional, Chinese crafts, and finished Chinese knots of their choice. 

 

Saturday June 22, 1-4 PM

Glissa // گليسة, by nashwa lina khan

Glissa is an intimate and transformative workshop centred around the art of collage. This small gathering, led by Moroccan-Pakistani artist and curator nashwa lina khan, invites participants to delve into collage as a feminist practice that honours archives, history, and storytelling. Together, we'll explore how collage can reframe, narrate, and highlight the multi-modal nature of feminist art.
