Sourd pour Toujours, Deaf Forever

Stéphanie Chabot

With this new installation created specifically for the space of La Centrale Galerie Powerhouse, Stéphanie Chabot proposes a sculptural research in the image of her curious and magical artistic intention, inspired by the absurd world we live in. She describes her images as a space where she invents settings constructed within contradictions, where meaning remains frozen on the edge of collapse. Here, the artist plays with the feeling of real or imaginary presence, thus inviting us in a precarious space where doubt rules, be it even superstition. Perceived differently during the day and at night, the project Sourd pour Toujours, Deaf Forever is characterized by a contrast between material (a sculpture, by day) and illusion (a person sitting, by night). Right now, in Montreal, in North America, in 2006, in our society of extreme capitalism constantly stuck between true and false, between presence and illusion, perhaps it is worth asking ourselves the question, Sourd pour Toujours, Deaf Forever? Up to you to reflect on this, by day or by night. Originally from the Outaouais region, Stéphanie Chabot established herself in Montreal for an undergraduate degree in painting at Concordia University. Since, she has worked in collaboration with other artists and has presented her work in various artist-run centres in Canada, most recently with the project "Basement Landscape" at Clark Gallery in March 2006. She is currently starting a masters at York University in Toronto. (http://stephaniechabot.netfirms.com)
