Photography is an extractive medium. As we navigate ecological crises, we should evaluate the sustainability of our materials and methods. In this workshop, we will discuss some of the social and environmental impacts of image production, while contemplating desirable futures for this artistic practice, and try an alternative photographic process called phytography. Together, we will:
● Introduce alternative photographic processes
● Highlight the relevance of a more-than-human approach
● Demonstrate phytography, a printmaking technique which uses the sun and the internal chemistry of plants to make artworks
● Develop phytograms to bring home at the end of the workshop
This workshop is open to anyone interested in learning about alternative photography, eco-art, and human/other-than-human collaboration. No previous experience is necessary!
