The June 18 2024
Mending the Future, by Alicia Aikens
Time: 1-3 PM
Limit of participants: 10
Language: English, French explanations provided by La Centrale's team if needed.
If we are living well, our clothes will inevitably collect badges of stains, holes, and lost buttons. This workshop seeks to launch a new paradigm around these marks and to build participant's confidence as a vessel for their transformation. Some misfit items will be available for participants to choose as their project for the class. Attendees will be equipped with basic mending skills and introduced to some more adventurous techniques for reinventing items in their wardrobe. The goal is to turn the lost objects into meaningful pieces that will have a new home. In addition to hands-on practice with these skills, a time of reflection and discussion surrounding the disposable nature of clothing in our culture will be held. Each participant will take away a mending kit, some literature and a hand-mended object of their choosing.
Alicia Aikens is co-founder of Solacene, a project to imagine a beautiful, sustainable tactile future.
