Chinese knot-making is an ancient crafting technique that still holds rich cultural significance today. Different Chinese knots have various meanings, uses, and histories. Participants will leave the workshop with an appreciation for slow-made, traditional, Chinese crafts, and finished Chinese knots of their choice. The process of knot-making is very meditative and requires patience and care, which participants can adopt into their own artistic or personal practices. Because an instructional zine will be provided, participants can make knots autonomously at their own pace and continue their practice at home if they so choose.
Allegra Hu is a queer, non-binary, Chinese-American, multidisciplinary artist based in Tiohtià:ke (Montreal). Their artistic practice explores the interconnectedness of diasporic communities through the circular nature of time by bringing ancient Chinese artistic techniques, practices, and folklore into the now. Reclaiming cultural knowledge through their art has been integral to developing a newfound relationship with Allegra's heritage and community. Through their craft, they honor mediums such as beading, Chinese knot-making, and jewelry-making as well as the craftspeople that hone and develop their artistry out of survival and love for making beautiful art.
