La Centrale galerie Powerhouse is organizing a discussion with the artist Rihab Essayh in collaboration with the organization Passages, a housing and integration resource for young women in difficulty, as part of Beneath the willow tree, the winter window exhibition presented from December 18, 2020 to January 24, 2021 at La Centrale galerie Powerhouse at 4296, St-Laurent blvd Tiohtiá:ke / Montreal.

Using the artist's work as a starting point, Rihab Essayh and Passages will discuss themes of mental health and violence from a feminist perspective.

The discussion will be held on Zoom and will take place in French but questions may also be taken in English.

To register, send an email to communication@lacentrale.org with the subject "Inscription discussion Rihab Essayh", with your last name, first name, pronoun (she, he, they ...). Places being limited, you will receive a confirmation of registration on January 18, 2021 depending on the number of places available.

Beneath the willow tree, Rihab Essayh, La Centrale's winter window exhibition from December 18, 2020 to January 24, 2021:
In this exhibition Beneath the willow tree, Rihab Essayh takes Ophelia, a fictional character from Shakespeare's play Hamlet, as a reference and represents the point of view from the water of her death. In her work, Rihab Essayh considers alienation as a cause of depression for women and uses this question to think about the boundaries between madness, depression, euphoria and ecstasy.

Rihab Essayh
Born in Casablanca, Morocco in 1992, Rihab Essayh is a multidisciplinary artist based in Guelph, Canada. She obtained her BFA at Concordia University in Montreal in 2017 and is pursuing her MFA at University of Guelph. Rihab Essayh's practice started with auto-ethnographic research and transformed by an exploratory methodology. She is interested in social relations in the digital age shaping part of our identity and social encounters online.

Passages
Passages offer a welcoming house and a comfortable environment to young women in difficulties to contribute in improving their living, health and security conditions. Passages also support them in any step or way that allows them to gain power over their lives. We promote and support their insertion and integration into society.

La Centrale galerie Powerhouse
Since 1973, La Centrale galerie Powerhouse is an artist centre dedicated to the dissemination and development of multidisciplinary feminist practices. The centre is committed to supporting practices and artists that are not very visible in dominant cultural institutions, and this at various stages of their careers. The centre’s programming dialogues with feminisms and supports intersectionality and social justice.
